World Green Economy Summit 2025 Sees UAE Push for Accelerated Climate Action
Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability Affairs, represented the UAE at the World Green Economy Summit (WGES) 2025 in Dubai, participating in two Ministerial sessions highlighting the country’s leadership in climate and water sustainability. His involvement contributes to the UAE’s attempts to build momentum ahead of COP30 and the 2026 UN Water Conference.
Balalaa emphasised at the Ministerial Roundtable on ‘Delivering Climate Ambition by 2030 and Beyond’ that ambition must shift from agreements to action, adding that current decisions will shape climate outcomes for future generations. He noted the UAE’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution, which was submitted in November 2024 and is aligned with the Net Zero by 2050 goal, as well as the Global Stocktake and the COP28 Consensus.
Balalaa discussed several programs, including the USD 30 billion Alterra Fund, the UAE Banks Federation’s AED 1 trillion sustainable finance initiative, and the Africa Green Investment plan, which aims to generate 15 GW of clean energy in Africa by 2030. Through platforms like Masdar, Green Sukuk, and blended finance, the UAE is mobilising large-scale private investments to speed global climate action.
