Malaysia has launched a Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar (HHFS) and Green Hydrogen Hub in Terengganu, marking a key step towards the country’s sustainable energy transition. The project is a collaboration between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), with both parties committed to increasing hydrogen production and derivatives.

TNB, through its generation subsidiary TNB Genco Sdn. Bhd. has partnered with Terengganu Inc., the state’s investment agency, to launch the floating solar initiative. Along with the HHFS, Petronas agreed that TNB will upgrade the grid infrastructure to support Malaysia’s renewable energy ambitions.

PM Anwar Ibrahim officiated the launch ceremony of the Sultan Mahmud Hydro Electric Power Station in Kenyir. During the event, agreements were formalised through document exchanges, setting the groundwork for joint development.

Terengganu Inc. President and Group CEO, Burhanuddin Hilmi Mohamed Harun, emphasised that these initiatives might propel Terengganu to the forefront of green energy, attracting investment and providing new economic opportunities. He also stated that the effort will help to establish local expertise and facilitate technological transfer.

The Green Hydrogen Hub, located along the Kenyir-Kertih Corridor, integrates continuous renewable energy generation, hydrogen production, and derivatives like green methanol and ammonia.
