Ecuador Joins Brazil, Argentina in 2026 World Cup Finals
Brazil and Ecuador have officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Brazil’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in São Paulo, inspired by Vinicius Júnior, secured their position and celebrated new head coach Carlo Ancelotti’s successful home debut. Brazil’s aggression rose significantly during the encounter, in contrast to their previous 0-0 draw against Ecuador. Ecuador eventually held Peru to a goalless draw, claiming their own World Cup ticket.
Argentina, the reigning champions, qualified earlier and continues to lead the South American standings. Brazil and Ecuador each have 25 points, trailing Argentina by 10 but comfortably ahead of seventh place with only two games remaining.
Uruguay came closer to qualification with a 2-0 win over Venezuela, while Chile was eliminated from contention after losing 2-0 to Bolivia. The defeat resulted in Ricardo Gareca’s dismissal. Veteran Alexis Sánchez expressed deep disappointment as Chile’s golden generation era came to an end.
Argentina tied 1-1 against Colombia, with goals from Luis Díaz and Thiago Almada. Lionel Messi played quietly, and Enzo Fernandez was sent off.
The last rounds in September will determine the remaining automatic slots as well as the intercontinental playoff berth. Colombia, Paraguay, Venezuela, and Bolivia remain in the running.
