Innovative Traffic Light System Positions Abu Dhabi as Global Smart Mobility Leader
Abu Dhabi has unveiled a new AI-powered traffic control system designed to reduce congestion and enhance road efficiency. The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), a part of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has verified the launch of Ramp Metering, a smart traffic light system, at seven major entry points to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street. With this step, the emirate joins a small group of cities globally that use AI-based technologies to regulate vehicle flow.
The system operates using advanced sensors and AI-enabled cameras to monitor traffic in real time. Signal timings are dynamically changed based on traffic density, ensuring that vehicles are released onto the road in a controlled and efficient manner. During rush hours, the number of cars entering Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street is reduced to ease congestion.
Officials noted that the technology is only activated when congestion is detected, allowing for fast flexibility to changing conditions throughout the day. The technology is being implemented on Shakhbout bin Sultan Street, Dhafeer Street, Hadbat Al Ghubainah Street, Salama bint Butti Street, Al Dhafra Street, Rabdan Street, and the Umm Yifina Street exit.
This move strengthens Abu Dhabi’s reputation for embracing innovative and sustainable transportation solutions.
