Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, has projected that India's agriculture exports will increase from Rs 4.5 lakh crore to Rs 20 lakh crore if more attention is placed on food processing, quality branding, and packaging. Speaking at the ICC Krishi Vikram session in New Delhi, he stated that India's agricultural footprint is growing globally, with jamun, litchi, and pineapple entering new markets. He revealed that jamun was sold to the UK, while litchis from Punjab were sent to Doha and Dubai. India's exports are increasing in markets such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other Gulf states, encouraged by the International Year of Millets campaign. Goyal emphasised the importance of a resilient supply chain, which includes seeds, fertilisers, and pesticides, to boost farm exports. He pushed for increasing drip irrigation to increase water efficiency and climate resilience. Efficient water management and smart irrigation could increase productivity while lowering losses. Blockchain-based certification will benefit natural and organic farming by providing traceability. Government initiatives like the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund and e-NAM platform integration are assisting the sector. Goyal asserted that these actions would turn agriculture into an engine of growth for India.

Animesh Kujur broke the national record in the 100 metres at the Dromia International Sprint & Relays competition in Greece. This is the first time an Indian sprinter has reached the 10.18-second mark in the event. Kujur, who already holds the national 200m record, has steadily improved under coach Martin Owens at the Odisha Reliance Foundation High-Performance Centre. Owens concentrated on refining Kujur's start and bend technique, which were previously weak points in his sprinting. Training with sprinters such as Gurindervir Singh, Manikanta Hoblidhar, and Amlan Borgohain has helped Kujur's improvement by establishing a competitive environment that pushes faster performances. The 22-year-old from Chhattisgarh switched from football to athletics six years ago and has consistently improved in national and international events. His most recent achievements include breaking the 200m national record in 20.32 seconds and winning a bronze medal at the Asian Athletics Championship, his first international appearance in India's colours. This latest record in Greece is consistent with the approach of competing in quicker events abroad to improve performance. Animesh Kujur's continuous growth heralds the beginning of a hopeful age in Indian sprinting.

GISEC Global 2025, hosted at the Dubai World Trade Centre, saw India and the UAE strengthen their bilateral cybersecurity engagement. The Data Security Council of India (DSCI), in collaboration with CIO Klub, held the second edition of the Indo-UAE Cybersecurity Exchange, which aimed to encourage strategic engagement between the two countries in the digital domain. Participants included top-tier cybersecurity professionals, legislators, and technology executives from India and the UAE. DSCI brought up a dedicated India Pavilion, which showcased over 15 Indian cybersecurity startups. These firms showcased cutting-edge breakthroughs in areas like threat intelligence, data privacy, application security, Security Operations Centres (SOCs), and new quantum technologies. The pavilion aims to promote collaboration between Indian solution providers and their UAE counterparts, hence improving cross-border cooperation in digital defence. B.G. Krishnan, Consul at the Consulate General of India in Dubai, emphasised the importance of cybersecurity in today's global environment. He discussed the effects of emerging threats, rapid digitalisation, and geopolitical upheavals on businesses and key infrastructure. DSCI Director Atul Kumar emphasised the reciprocal benefits of increased cyber collaboration. He emphasised that as both countries' digital adoption accelerates, there is an increasing need to collaborate on the development of resilient and secure infrastructures. The conference, titled 'Priming Asia for Good', will be held from May 5 to 7 and will focus on collaborative innovations to address global concerns in health, climate, and education. President Shanmugaratnam lauded India's program as a unique approach that blends local agency with central support. He stated that the plan, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, aims to accelerate development in 112 of India's most disadvantaged regions. He attributed its success to its ability to empower communities by promoting health workers, data-driven systems, and locally led solutions, particularly in maternal and child health. He cited philanthropic organisations such as the Gates Foundation, Tata Trusts, and Piramal Foundation. Delhi-based researcher Shriti Pandey, who was also present at the summit, echoed this sentiment. She observed women taking on leadership roles in village clinics and Anganwadis as part of the scheme. India also offered to help Angola improve its digital public infrastructure and capacity-building operations. Prime Minister Modi underlined India's commitment to sharing its expertise in a variety of fields, including space technology, healthcare, and vital minerals, to strengthen their collaboration. In a broader perspective, PM Modi restated India's strong position against terrorism, adding that the country would take serious action against terrorists and their supporters. Mao Saigo of Japan won her maiden Major championship by winning a thrilling and unprecedented five-woman playoff at the Chevron Championship on April 27 in The Woodlands, Texas. Saigo hammered in a pivotal five-foot birdie putt at The Club at Carlton Woods, fulfilling a long-held desire. Starting the day tied for the lead with South Korea's Ryu Hae-ran, Saigo shot a two-over-par 74 and needed a birdie at the par-five 18th to make the playoff. Yin Ruoning of China, Kim Hyo-joo of South Korea, Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand, and American Lindy Duncan all finished at seven-under-par 281. It featured the biggest playoff field in LPGA Major history. Ariya appeared to be on track for victory, but she failed at the final hole after a mistake in which she barely struck her ball, resulting in a costly bogey. Except for Saigo, no other player was able to capitalise throughout the playoffs. Yin sank her birdie attempt, but Kim, Ariya, and Duncan all missed theirs. Saigo's patient approach to her pitch shot led to the winning birdie. With six wins on the LPGA of Japan Tour, this was her first victory on American soil. Saigo is now aiming for the world No. 1 ranking.

The torches for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games were unveiled during separate premiere events in Milan, Italy and Osaka, Japan. Four notable Italian athletes played a key role in presenting the torch designs, which capture the essence of Italian elegance and contemporary innovation. The design, called "Essential," respects simplicity by gracefully integrating form and function. Olympic cross-country skiing champion Stefania Belmondo, who lit the Olympic cauldron in Turin in 2006, praised the torch's clear lines and intuitive build. She appreciated its simplicity and lightweight design at the Triennale di Milano, describing it as easy to carry and aesthetically pleasing. Paralympic wheelchair fencing champion Bebe Vio mirrored Belmondo's praise, calling the flame beautiful and subtle. Simultaneously, three-time Paralympic athletics champion Martina Caironi and Olympic figure skating bronze medallist Carolina Kostner presented the flame to the Japanese audience at Expo 2025 in Osaka. The Olympic and Paralympic torches (blue-green and bronze) reflect sustainable design concepts. They are made of recyclable aluminium and brass, can be refilled up to ten times, and run on renewable gas, considerably decreasing production waste. The torches will be displayed in Expo 2025's Italia Pavilion before being moved to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne after the Games.

On Monday, Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal said that the UK and India have decided to resume negotiations on a long-standing trade pact. The two nations intend to expedite negotiations and finalise important trade measures. Goyal made the announcement during a joint press briefing with UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds. Reynolds is in India to restart conversations that were stopped last year owing to general elections in both nations. With global trade facing increasing uncertainty, including potential retaliatory tariffs from the US, the resumption of discussions is viewed as critical. Both governments intend to sign a bilateral free trade agreement and an investment treaty. This was the first trade talk between India and the UK since the Labour Party took administration in July 2024. Reynolds emphasised that reaching an agreement is a "top priority" for his administration. Meanwhile, UK Investment Minister Poppy Gustafsson plans to visit Mumbai and Bengaluru. She will meet with Indian investors and encourage them to consider prospects in the UK. Trade between India and the UK has been steadily increasing. According to UK official estimates, bilateral trade in commodities and services totalled $52 billion in the 12 months preceding September 2024.

On Friday, second seed Coco Gauff ended the dream run of British qualifier Sonay Kartal with a 6-4, 6-0 victory, advancing to the fourth round of Wimbledon. Kartal, who started the week ranked 298th in the world, put up a strong fight, but Gauff prevailed in the opening set to make the match certain. Champion of the U.S. Open Gauff remarked, "I thought I played really well, and she was playing at a high level, especially in the first set," on Court One beneath the covered canopy. She was not letting me settle and wasn't giving me anything to work with. I eventually discovered it, even though I felt like I was aiming for the correct shots but was just missing." Gauff has not advanced to the quarterfinals despite qualifying for the fourth round in 2019 at the age of 15 and again in 2021. Emma Navarro, the 19th-seeded American who overcame Diana Shnaider on Friday, will be her opponent this time. At Wimbledon, where she hopes to break her previous best and make her maiden quarterfinal appearance, Gauff's steady play further establishes her as a strong opponent.
