India, EU Eye Deeper Cooperation as High-Level Meetings Intensify
India and the European Union are intensifying efforts to complete their free trade agreement (FTA) by the end of the year, with two decisive rounds of talks slated within the next month. According to top sources, negotiations will focus on sensitive issues like rules of origin, market access, and duties on wine and dairy products.
European Commission officials, including Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen and Trade Chief Maros Sefcovic, are in India this week for discussions with their counterparts. The EU is now India’s top commercial partner, with bilateral commerce in goods valued at $135 billion in 2023-24.
Beyond trade, both sides are working on transformative initiatives, such as a fresh political-strategic vision and frameworks to improve defence cooperation. On September 17, the EU will unveil its new vision document for ties with India, which will serve as a guide for future collaboration.
This vision will be formally adopted at the annual India-EU summit, which is expected to take place in early 2026. In the run-up, multiple high-level events are planned, including counter-terrorism talks in Brussels, visits by EU parliamentary committees, and the Indo-Pacific ministerial forum in November.
