Green Tourism Collections Highlight Thailand’s Push for Sustainable Travel
Thailand has launched Green Tourism Collections to align with global environmental standards and accommodate the growing demand for eco-friendly tourism. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) unveiled the project with 20 sustainable routes encompassing ten cities designated as Green Cities, including Chiang Mai, Krabi and Bangkok. Each route promotes low-impact travel, conservation, and community support.
This initiative represents Thailand’s commitment to the 2030 Sustainable Tourism Goals and addresses changing tourist expectations, particularly from the EU and the US. The project, developed in collaboration with EU partners, assures compliance with European sustainability benchmarks, such as adequate waste management and wildlife protection practices.
A notable feature is the Green Mayor program, which involves local municipalities in planning and managing tourism. This community-centred approach promotes both environmental preservation and socio-economic growth in participating cities.
The official launch in Bangkok’s Phumjai Garden marked the start of Thailand’s global expansion. TAT intends to promote the program through digital campaigns and tourism expos like WTM London 2025. Certified travel routes offer tourists the confidence of ethical travel, while showcasing Thailand’s cultural and ecological richness.
With development plans in place, the Green Tourism Collections are anticipated to steer Thailand’s tourism industry towards a more sustainable and globally competitive future.
