Joint Exercise Paves Way for India-EU Counter-UAS Cooperation
India and the EU completed their first joint counter-terrorism exercise, which focused on tackling threats posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and improving the security of important infrastructure and soft targets.
The three-day programme, which ended on Wednesday, involved senior officers, instructors, and technical experts from India’s National Security Guard and the EU’s High Risk Security Network. The exercise focused on advanced UAS operations, counter-drone tactics, and the development of procedures for integrated UAS and counter-UAS missions.
The training, held at NSG’s Manesar headquarters, included tactical and technology modules, culminating in a joint simulation aimed at improving interoperability and readiness. Participants explored emerging threats like swarm and autonomous drone systems, and talked about cutting-edge detection and neutralisation technologies like AI, directed energy, and kinetic measures.
The program also included developing standard operating procedures and an Engagement Decision Matrix to protect mass gatherings and vital infrastructure. EU Ambassador Hervé Delphin emphasised the rising necessity for coordinated responses to rapidly emerging drone threats, stating that the exercise demonstrates India and the EU’s commitment to civilian safety.
This counter-terrorism engagement, facilitated by the EU’s “Enhancing Security Cooperation In and With Asia and the Indo-Pacific” project, builds on previous EU-India discussions and reaffirms the common focus on fighting non-state actors’ use of drones.
