Nigeria Targets Clean Energy for Public Infrastructure with N100 Billion Plan

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI), which will provide distributed solar power systems to public institutions nationwide. The plan, which has received an initial budget of N100 billion from the Federal Government, will power schools, hospitals, security facilities, government offices, and other critical infrastructure.

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Budget Office of the Federation, Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Abuja to formalise the initiative.

According to REA Managing Director Abba Abubakar Aliyu, Phase 0 will be fully funded by the government. Later phases will attract both domestic and foreign private investment using blended financing solutions that do not require sovereign guarantees. The project’s goal is to reduce diesel dependence, ensure clean energy access, and lower the carbon impact of public sector operations.

Tanimu Yakubu, Director-General of the Budget Office, noted that public institutions have the financial capacity to continue using renewable energy, which improves market viability. InfraCorp CEO Lazarus Angbazo praised the NPSSI as a model for future infrastructure finance.

By the end of 2024, Nigeria’s installed solar capacity was 385 MWp, with a target of 500 MW by 2025.
