Thailand plans to bring Formula One to Bangkok by 2028. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with Formula One chief Stefano Domenicali and announced plans for a feasibility study. The proposed race would take place on a street circuit in the capital.

Formula One’s calendar already includes 24 events, including four in Asia-Pacific. The Singapore Grand Prix is held in Southeast Asia, however, Thailand is keen to join the circuit. The country’s FIA-accredited Buriram track presently hosts MotoGP, but organisers want a city race to increase global exposure.

Shinawatra highlighted the event’s potential economic benefits. She emphasised its importance in modernising Bangkok’s infrastructure, decreasing traffic, and attracting high-end tourists. The government will evaluate the investment costs, race routes, and potential benefits.

Domenicali welcomed the proposal as “impressive.” He expressed enthusiasm for further conversation. The project’s goal is to create jobs, promote innovation, and establish Thailand as a destination for world-class athletic events.

Despite the lack of an official agreement, Thailand’s aspirations indicate its increasing influence in international motorsport. The Bangkok Grand Prix, if authorised, would be a major turning point in the nation’s sporting history.
