Jowai’s Sawakani Wins Gold

Sawakani Lakiang from Tpep-Pale, Jowai, has won gold in the Bikini Model Bodybuilding category at the World Fitness Federation (WFF) South East Asia Championship 2026, held in Pattaya, Thailand, on October 24 and 25.

The victory marks her second major international achievement, following her gold medal at the SAARC Women’s Bikini Model Championship in Mumbai in 2025. That win made her the first woman from Meghalaya to secure a WFF Pro Card, granting her professional status in the sport.

Lakiang returned to Meghalaya on October 30, where she received a warm welcome from her community, family and members of Satar Gym. She was also felicitated in recognition of her achievement, which has brought pride to the state’s bodybuilding community.

Her success has received support from regional leaders and sporting organisations, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and the Meghalaya Body Building and Fitness Association (MBBFA).

Lakiang’s latest victory highlights the growing participation of women from northeastern India in competitive bodybuilding. Her achievements have also drawn attention to the region’s emerging fitness talent and the increasing presence of Indian athletes at international competitions.

The gold medal adds to Meghalaya’s sporting accomplishments and strengthens Lakiang’s standing in the international fitness circuit, as she continues to represent India at competitions beyond the country.
