UP’s Rooftop Solar Drive Powers Its Renewable Energy Growth
Uttar Pradesh has climbed to third place in India’s solar energy production, driven by the rapidly expanding rooftop solar scheme, which has transformed household participation in clean electricity. The state has deployed more than 2.8 lakh rooftop systems, adding approximately 976 MW to its renewable capacity. Rising adoption shows how families are reducing their electricity expenditures while supporting sustainable energy goals. Daily generation from these sites has surpassed 4 million units, increasing power supply and easing pressure on traditional sources. This transition has also resulted in decreased carbon emissions in cities and villages.
The initiative grew significantly under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s administration, which prioritised affordability, savings, and employment creation. Clear policy direction and excellent communication prompted broad public engagement, resulting in over 13 lakh applications. Subsidies of nearly ₹2,400 crore from the state and Centre made the systems inexpensive, accelerating acceptance across varied socioeconomic categories.
The project has also created over 48,000 direct jobs in installation, maintenance, and technical services, thereby increasing the green workforce. With thousands of homes generating their own power, distributed solar has increased energy security and cut transmission losses.
