India targets green ammonia export rollout by 2028

India is set to begin exporting green ammonia as early as 2028, marking a significant step in its ambition to become a global player in the clean hydrogen economy. Renewable Energy Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said discussions with potential buyers in Europe and Japan are already underway, with talks in Singapore also progressing. The move aligns with India’s broader push to scale up renewable energy and meet its climate commitments.

A major driver of this effort is the $10 billion green ammonia project at Kakinada, being developed by AM Green, backed by the founders of the Greenko Group and supported by global partners including Gentari, Singapore’s GIC, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. The plant will be powered by a combination of solar and wind energy and is designed to produce green ammonia at scale, although detailed timelines for capacity and commissioning are yet to be finalised.

This initiative represents India’s entry into large-scale exports of clean fuel, supported by international partnerships and growing global demand. Green ammonia, produced using renewable electricity instead of fossil fuels, is increasingly seen as a viable alternative for decarbonising industries such as shipping, fertilisers, and power generation. For India, the project not only strengthens its clean energy credentials but also opens up new opportunities for green jobs, technology leadership, and long-term export growth.
