UAE Becomes First Gulf Nation to Grant Sporting Status to Yoga

The UAE is ready to create history by formally recognising yoga as a competitive sport, the first of its kind in the Gulf region.

The UAE is ready to create history by formally recognising yoga as a competitive sport, the first of its kind in the Gulf region. This decision emphasises the growing cultural and diplomatic links between India and the UAE, where approximately four million Indians live and actively contribute to the country’s social fabric.

The decision was made during the second Joint Steering Committee Meeting of the India-UAE Cultural Council, which took place in Abu Dhabi from October 8 to 9. The Indian team, led by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Director-General Nandini Singla, conducted detailed meetings with UAE authorities led by Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of State in the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Officials confirmed that the UAE Yoga Committee, which reports to the Ministry of Sports, is building a national framework for yoga tournaments.

In addition to this cultural engagement, the UAE has approved the development of an “India House” in Abu Dhabi. The proposed facility will be a creative and educational hub for art, culture, and student exchange, including a dedicated yoga training zone. These projects expand on the 2022 MoU signed by PM Modi and President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which strengthens India-UAE cultural cooperation.
