India has launched Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 to reshape its sports environment and promote a culture that combines sports and academics. The policy is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, which aims to place India among the world’s top sports nations by 2036. It focuses on grassroots talent identification, competitive leagues, and world-class training, with a particular emphasis on the involvement of women, tribal, and marginalised communities.

The government has committed ₹1,000 crore for the Khelo India initiative in 2025-26, representing a 130% increase in the sports budget. The policy encourages public-private collaborations to create a sustainable sports environment, which is driving sports tourism and increasing livelihood opportunities.

Khelo India has approved 326 infrastructure projects, established 1,045 Khelo India Centres, and provides support to over 2,850 athletes across India. The program has organised several events, including Youth Games and Para Games, to enhance participation and competitive exposure.

KIRTI (Khelo India Rising Talent Identification) scouts talent from ages 9 to 18 via 174 Talent Assessment Centres. The National Sports University in Imphal adds academic and research backing to this vision, training future athletes and sports professionals.
