Electric car sales in Germany reached a new high in the first half of 2025, according to the German road traffic agency KBA. During this time, nearly one in every five newly registered vehicles was electric, indicating that consumers are becoming more interested in sustainable mobility.

According to the KBA, electric vehicle sales in Germany increased by 35% between January and June to 248,726 units, up from 184,125 units in the same period in 2024. This beat the previous record established in 2023, indicating a growing demand for electric vehicles across the country.

Germany’s progress is consistent with the broader European trend, in which electric vehicle sales have increased dramatically despite a fall in overall car sales. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, Europe remains the world’s second-largest electric vehicle market, owing to stronger EU emissions laws and the introduction of more affordable electric vehicles.

In Germany, electric vehicles accounted for 17.7% of all new vehicle registrations during the first half of the year. However, the total number of newly registered vehicles fell to 1.4 million units, reflecting a 4.7% decrease from the same period the previous year.
