India and Mauritius are preparing to deepen their collaboration in ocean technology and the blue economy, with Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh underlining that the sector provides new prospects for long-term development. Speaking to senior Mauritian bureaucrats at the National Centre for Good Governance in New Delhi, he stated that both countries share a maritime tradition, which provides an opportunity for collaborative development.

Dr Singh said that India’s growing expertise in ocean-based innovation, such as marine resource management and advanced fisheries systems, can help Mauritius shape its island-focused economic strategy. He highlighted India’s progress under the Deep Ocean Mission. He also emphasised how India’s progress in desalination technology has improved water supply in areas like Lakshadweep.

He claimed that technology can alleviate long-standing issues related to water scarcity. He pointed out that India’s desalination plants create drinking water from seawater while also contributing to renewable energy generation.

The Minister urged Mauritius to collaborate with Indian scientific institutions on cooperative maritime investigations. He urged that both sides design a ten-year framework for sustainable ocean development.

A group of 17 top officials is visiting India for the second Capacity Building Programme for Civil Servants. The visit is part of a larger deal to educate 500 Mauritian officers over five years.
