Indonesia Eyes Major Carbon Credit Deals as COP30 Preparations Intensify
Indonesia is aiming to secure significant carbon credit deals totalling around USD 1 billion at the COP30 climate conference in Belém, Brazil. The government aims to generate 16 trillion IDR through the sale of around 90 million tonnes of carbon credits derived from forest conservation, marine ecosystem protection, renewable energy work, and different industrial emission-reduction initiatives.
Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that the initiative is consistent with Presidential Regulation No. 110 of 2025, which guides Indonesia’s carbon economic value framework. He stated that the delegation plans to use the Indonesia Pavilion and other interaction platforms during COP30 to highlight national efforts and increase the country’s influence in climate negotiations.
Indonesia also attended the Belém Leaders’ Summit on November 6-7, when world leaders addressed further climate cooperation. The delegation included Raja Juli Antoni, the Minister of Forestry, and Hashim Djojohadikusumo, the Special Presidential Envoy for Energy and Climate Change.
Djojohadikusumo stated that President Prabowo Subianto’s administration is expediting the shift from coal to cleaner energy sources by developing renewables and promoting biofuels like biodiesel and bioethanol.
During COP30, Indonesia will have daily seller-buyer meetings at its pavilion to promote carbon trading and reaffirm its commitment to global emission reduction targets and sustainable economic growth.
