At the National Space Day celebrations in New Delhi, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) head V. Narayanan announced that India will launch the Chandrayaan-4 mission with the Venus Orbiter Mission. He added that India aims to establish the Bharatiya Antriksh Station (BAS) operational by 2035, with the first module scheduled to launch in 2028.

Narayanan stated that by 2040, India is determined to land on the Moon and safely bring back its crew, positioning the Indian space program on par with the most advanced in the world. He revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the development of a Next Generation Launcher (NGL) to support these ambitious missions.

The ISRO chief also reflected on Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s historic journey as the first Indian in 41 years to travel to space as part of NASA’s Axiom-4 mission. He credited the prime minister with the vision to send a “Gaganyatri” to the International Space Station ahead of India’s own crewed mission.

Prime Minister Modi addressed the ceremony virtually, recalling the success of Chandrayaan-3 and praising Indian scientists for their ongoing efforts. He praised Shukla for raising the national flag aboard the ISS and highlighted India’s commitment to space exploration, which includes the Gaganyaan human spaceflight.
