Kandla Port Achieves Milestone with India’s First Indigenous Green Hydrogen Facility
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the successful commissioning of India’s first Make-in-India green hydrogen plant in the port sector, located in Kandla, Gujarat. This project, developed by the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), is a significant step forward in India’s renewable energy transition and corresponds with the nation’s commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
The DPA announced the facility’s operationalisation in a post on X, hailing it as a step forward in green innovation and sustainable development. Prime Minister Modi praised the initiative, saying it promotes the government’s Net-Zero vision.
This achievement follows just four months after the foundation stone for a 10 MW green hydrogen plant was laid by PM Modi during his visit to Bhuj in May 2025. The Kandla facility is currently India’s first port to have a megawatt-scale indigenous green hydrogen unit.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the facility, accompanied by Minister Shantanu Thakur, Secretary T.K. Ramachandran, and DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh. Sonowal highlighted the prompt completion of the 1 MW module as an important engineering accomplishment.
The project is expected to considerably cut maritime emissions and encourage the use of clean energy, reinforcing Gujarat’s leadership in renewable infrastructure.
