India Expands Rice Export Footprint to 26 Nations, Including Japan and Mexico
India is preparing to promote its rice varieties in 26 new international markets, including Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Mexico, to increase its ₹1.8 trillion rice export revenue. This program is a crucial step towards diversifying India’s export base and enhancing its position in global food markets.
Dev Garg, Vice-President of the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF), claimed that these countries now rely on suppliers such as Pakistan and Thailand, providing a chance for India to increase its market share. This global outreach initiative will be officially launched during the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025, which will be held in New Delhi on October 30 and 31.
The event, organised by IREF in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), will bring together representatives from more than 172 rice-importing countries. India, one of the world’s largest rice producers, produced approximately 150 million tonnes in FY25 on 47 million hectares, accounting for 28% of global rice output.
Exports reached 20.1 million tonnes, worth $12.95 billion. APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev confirmed the attendance of ministers from the Philippines, Ghana, Namibia, and the Gambia.
