Nigeria to Host India’s First IIT Campus Under Global Education Expansion

India is set to expand its world-class higher education network with the establishment of the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in West Africa, which will open in Nigeria by 2026.

India is set to expand its world-class higher education network with the establishment of the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in West Africa, which will open in Nigeria by 2026. The program is a big step forward in India’s global education outreach under the National Education Policy 2020, which pushes Indian universities to create worldwide campuses and strengthen cross-border collaboration.

Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, announced the development after meeting with India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, in Abuja. The planned IIT campus would be placed in the Federal Government Academy in Suleja, which is known for nurturing academically gifted students. With India’s assistance, the institution will be transformed into an excellence centre.

The model will be similar to IIT Madras’ international campus in Zanzibar, with India providing academic competence, faculty, and training, and Nigeria developing the infrastructure. Planning, recruitment, and curriculum design will be managed by a joint team.

The initiative, which follows the IIT Madras-Zanzibar and IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi campuses, highlights India’s rising global academic footprint. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasised that India’s growing IIT network illustrates the country’s commitment to share educational quality and establishing long-term relationships in science, technology, and innovation.
