Garpenberg Mine to Stage Historic 26.2-Mile Race Below Earth’s Surface
Sweden is set to host a groundbreaking event – the world’s deepest marathon – within the Garpenberg Mine, operated by Boliden. The race, scheduled for October 25, will feature 60 participants covering the regular marathon distance of 26.2 miles, but in unique conditions: 1,000 meters underground.
The initiative is being organised by BecomingX, which was founded by Bear Grylls and Paul Gurney, in partnership with the International Council on Mining and Metals. Its goal is to raise $1 million for charity and highlight innovation in extreme environments. Participants will travel through dark, silent tunnels utilising just headlamps for light sources. Safety remains a top priority, with runners required to wear protective equipment and access to underground rescue chambers ensured.
The majority of contestants are from the mining and metals sectors and represent 17 countries. Many are Boliden employees with proven endurance abilities. Due to space constraints, the event is closed to spectators.
Boliden’s CEO, Mikael Staffas, emphasized that Garpenberg, one of the world’s most technologically advanced mines, is an appropriate location for this unique challenge. The organisers aspire to set two Guinness World Records: one for depth and one for event organisation.
