Japan earned a 2–0 win against Chinese Taipei in the 5th–8th place classification match of the Hero Asia Cup 2025. Japan entered the match eager to recover from its narrow elimination in the Super 4s, while Taipei was still searching for its first success of the tournament.

From the opening whistle, Japan showed greater intent and relied on its hallmark counterattacking style. Just five minutes into play, Ryosuke Shinohara capitalised on a defensive lapse to score the first goal. He struck again shortly after, finishing calmly from a Kaito Tanaka assist that left the Taipei goalkeeper with little chance.

Japan appeared to be in full command by the end of the first quarter. Yet, Chinese Taipei regrouped and gradually found rhythm, relying heavily on the sharp reflexes of goalkeeper Ting-Shuo Hsu. He pulled off a series of impressive saves, particularly from Japan’s penalty corners, ensuring the deficit did not widen.

The second half saw Japan create further opportunities but struggle with finishing, failing to convert four penalty corners. Taipei’s defence showed determination, though their forward line could not create meaningful threats. The result left Japan satisfied with victory but still reflecting on its inconsistency in the tournament.
