Data Centre Growth to Boost Malaysian Economy with $1.3 Billion in Annual Wages
Malaysia’s data centre industry is rapidly transforming into a major employment generator. According to the Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association (APDCA), the sector is expected to support 30,900 jobs per year by 2030. There will be 4,300 high-value positions in advanced fields like AI and cloud computing.
The APDCA’s July 24 report indicates a large multiplier effect, indicating that each direct employment creates 3.2 additional positions in supporting industries. Malaysia’s digital infrastructure sector is rapidly developing, with data centre investments expected to rise 185% between 2023 and 2025. In 2024, the government received US$34 billion from global cloud service providers.
Nearly 40,000 jobs have already been created in construction, logistics, engineering, and information technology. Mechanical engineering, server deployment, and facility security are among the roles available.
Annual salary income is predicted to rise from US$175 million in 2024 to US$1.3 billion in 2030. The APDCA predicts that the sector’s total economic impact, including construction and operations, will be $34.2 billion in output and gross value added annually.
