India Installs 4,557 EV Charging Stations on Highways, Says Gadkari
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, addressed the Rajya Sabha that 4,557 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations have been installed across India’s massive 146,342 km network of National Highways, expressways, and State Highways. This infrastructure initiative is a crucial step toward increasing the adoption of electric vehicles nationwide.
Uttar Pradesh has the most charging stations (507), followed by Karnataka (489), Maharashtra (459), Tamil Nadu (456) and Rajasthan (424).
In addition, as of April 1, 2025, 4,625 charging stations were operating in various tier-2 cities nationwide. The national government is now building on this momentum with the PM E-Drive plan, which aims to establish 72,000 EV charging stations at Rs 2,000 crore. These charging stations will be strategically located in metro areas, toll plazas, railway stations, airports, petrol stations and major highways.
The PM E-Drive initiative, which would be launched in October 2024, also includes Rs 10,900 crore for EV demand incentives and Rs 873.50 crore for oil PSUs to set up 8,932 stations under the FAME-II scheme. Furthermore, the Centre has announced incentives worth up to Rs 9.6 lakh for electric trucks.
