Piyush Goyal advocates balanced global trade reforms at the WTO gathering
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal represented India at a key meeting of the World Trade Organization, where he called for inclusive and equitable reforms to the global trading system. Addressing fellow ministers and trade representatives, Goyal emphasised the need for a framework that better reflects the interests of developing economies.
India highlighted concerns related to agricultural support, food security, fisheries negotiations, and fair market access. Goyal argued that reforms should ensure that smaller and developing nations have equal opportunities to participate in and benefit from global trade.
The minister stressed the importance of preserving policy space for countries pursuing development objectives while maintaining a rules-based international trading system. He also urged members to work toward consensus-driven solutions capable of addressing contemporary economic challenges.
The WTO meeting comes at a time when global trade faces pressures from geopolitical tensions, supply-chain disruptions and shifting economic priorities. Many member nations are seeking reforms to make the organisation more effective in addressing modern trade issues.
India has consistently advocated for a development-oriented approach within the WTO and remains an active participant in negotiations affecting agriculture, services, and industrial trade. Officials believe inclusive reforms are essential for ensuring long-term stability, fairness and growth in the global trading environment.
