India Unveils Economic Package to Support Mauritius’ Growth and Chagos Surveillance
India announced a $680 million economic support package for Mauritius, reinforcing their long-standing ties and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. The package comprises a $25 million budgeted support for essential initiatives targeted at improving infrastructure, maritime security, and economic development.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam to Varanasi, emphasising the historical connection between Mauritius and Indian “girmitiyas” who moved from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in the nineteenth century. Ramgoolam’s visit comes after PM Modi’s March trip to Mauritius, highlighting the two countries’ deepening partnership.
The package includes $440 million in grants and loans for important projects like a new air traffic control tower at SSR International Airport, equipment for Port Louis, and the construction of a freeway and ring road. An additional $215 million in grants will fund four significant initiatives, including the establishment of a 500-bed national hospital, a veterinary school, and an Ayush centre of excellence.
Following the Chagos Islands sovereignty agreement with the UK, India will aid Mauritius in the surveillance of its expanded Exclusive Economic Zone. PM Modi described the deal as a “historic milestone,” emphasising India’s support for Mauritius’ sovereignty and maritime security.
