Thailand has launched a bold initiative to revitalise its tourism industry, offering free domestic flights to 200,000 international visitors. The proposed scheme, “Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights,” has a THB 700 million budget and is scheduled to run from September to November 2025, pending Cabinet approval.

Foreign travellers who book international airfare to Thailand through participating airlines or authorised online travel brokers will receive a free one-way ticket (THB 1,750) or a round-trip ticket (THB 3,500), each with a 20 kg luggage allowance.

Six airlines—Thai Airways International, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai VietJet—have signed on to the promotion, which aims to direct visitors away from crowded hubs like Bangkok and Phuket and towards UNESCO World Heritage cities, cultural hubs, and underexplored areas.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports expects that the campaign will create at least THB 8.81 billion in direct tourism revenue, with a total economic impact of around THB 21.80 billion. The Thai initiative, modelled after a successful similar scheme in Japan, aims to distribute tourists’ spending more fairly around the country and promote long-term sustainable growth in the sector.
