India and the United Arab Emirates have begun discussions to collaborate on the production of green steel and high-grade aluminium, to advance sustainable manufacturing and strengthen industrial ties. Union Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and UAE Minister of Economy Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri met recently, under the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.

India aims to produce 300 million tonnes of steel by 2030, and sees the UAE as a significant partner in raw material supply, clean energy systems, and infrastructure. The collaboration will concentrate on renewable energy-driven metallurgy and creating robust global supply networks while securing long-term resources. Discussions included the joint development of high-quality steel and aluminium for the automobile and strategic industries.

The UAE’s renewable energy infrastructure and strategic location are viewed as assets in this collaboration. Public sector firms such as SAIL, NMDC, and MECON are expanding their operations in the UAE. SAIL presently imports limestone from Stevin Rock LLC in the UAE, while NMDC is looking for mining collaborations in the Gulf. MECON intends to help engineering projects in steel and smart infrastructure in the UAE.
