Shangri-La Solar Plant Begins Operations, Advancing Colombia’s Decarbonisation Goals

Colombia has enhanced its clean energy landscape with the opening of the Shangri-La Solar Plant, one of the country’s largest solar installations. Atlas Renewable Energy developed the 201 MWp project in Ibagué, Tolima, which is the company’s first solar endeavour in Colombia and a significant milestone in the country’s push for sustainable power.

The project is planned to generate 403.7 GWh of power annually, providing over 214,000 homes and reducing roughly 161,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions yearly—equivalent to removing approximately 34,000 cars from the road.

Atlas Renewable Energy stated that the project’s impact includes community development. According to Country Manager Rubén Borja, Shangri-La provided major local employment and training possibilities, with local people filling more than 65% of construction jobs. Women accounted for 22% of the workforce, exceeding the company’s inclusion objectives and encouraging more involvement in technical jobs.

The corporation also launched its “We are part of the same energy” campaign, which aims to improve gender inclusion and technical skill development while investing in social infrastructure to support education and community engagement.

Built in collaboration with ISAGEN, the project is part of a larger strategy to generate 1,000 MW of solar capacity in Colombia.
