166 New Open-Design Schools to Anchor Community Life in Saudi Cities

Saudi Arabia plans to open 166 “schools without walls” as part of an ambitious effort to revamp educational infrastructure and encourage broader community involvement. The idea was announced by Tatweer Building Company (TBC), which oversees infrastructure projects for the Ministry of Education. These schools aspire to be multifunctional spaces that provide learning possibilities outside regular school hours and traditional academic boundaries.

The new facilities will be created in residential areas developed by the National Housing Company (NHC) in six major Saudi cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Al Ihsa, Tabuk, and Medina. This intentional location is consistent with the government’s objective to incorporate educational environments directly into urban living places.

Architecturally modern and open in design, these schools will serve as places for educational programs, recreational activities, and cultural events, particularly in the evenings and on weekends. Each school will be closely linked to local community centres, ensuring accessibility and encouraging participation from people of all ages.

This action aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to improve the quality of life and create dynamic communities through innovative public services and infrastructure. By repositioning schools as community anchors, the concept redefines their function in society and promotes lifelong education.
