Ahmed Salim, Maldives Minister for Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, met with Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh in New Delhi to learn about India’s emerging governance practices. The seminar discussed India’s approach to public administration, policy delivery, and institutional coordination. The discussions took place while a 30-member Maldivian team visited India for a Capacity Building Training Programme conducted by the National Centre for Good Governance. The programme was organised in response to a request from the Maldives government and aims to familiarise officials with India’s successful governance systems.

Dr Singh emphasised that steady reforms, technological solutions, and citizen-driven initiatives have shaped India’s governance structure. He stated that India’s strategy strikes a balance between policy formation and on-the-ground implementation, making it appropriate for countries seeking to strengthen democratic institutions.

The Maldivian side expressed an interest in learning how India executes welfare schemes, manages coordination across several government levels, and fosters community participation. They also wanted India’s experience in coastal management. Dr Singh discussed India’s involvement in the Deep Ocean Mission and the development of desalination technology for island regions like Lakshadweep.

He also emphasised India’s achievement in women-led development, such as the participation of women on scientific missions and grassroots entrepreneurship.
