Food Production Growth Marks Milestone in Indonesia’s Self-Sufficiency Drive
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced that the country’s food production has increased significantly despite prolonged dry seasons and the growing impact of climate change. Speaking during the launch of a large agricultural expo in Tangerang, Banten province, he emphasised Indonesia’s ability to handle harsh weather patterns while still achieving significant production gains.
President Prabowo emphasised the resilience of Indonesian farmers and the government’s efforts to boost food security during a prolonged dry season caused by climate change and El Niño-La Niña.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Indonesia’s national rice reserves exceeded 4 million tonnes in May this year, the highest level ever recorded. This milestone is significant in the country’s efforts to maintain price stability and secure enough supplies for its population of over 270 million people.
Experts credit this accomplishment to increased irrigation projects, the use of climate-resilient rice varieties, and government subsidies for fertilisers and agricultural technology. The administration remains committed to achieving self-sufficiency in staple foods and reducing reliance on imports, which is critical as global food supply chains are disrupted by climate volatility and geopolitical tensions.
