Dr. Samir V Kamat, chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is certain that India would meet its defence export objective of ₹50,000 crore by 2028-29. He underlined the increased global interest in indigenous systems like as Pinaka, the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), BrahMos, and Akash.

Kamat noted that countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are looking into these technologies, with recent operational achievements like Operation Sindoor strengthening India’s credibility. He expects defence exports to double within two to three years.

In 2024-25, India’s defence exports totalled ₹23,622 crore, up 12.04% from ₹21,083 crore in 2023-24. Defence output reached a record of ₹1.51 lakh crore, up 18% from the previous year and 90% from 2019-20. Public sector enterprises accounted for 77% of production, with private firms accounting for the rest.

Kamat lauded Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India for promoting self-reliance in the defence industry. The Ministry of Defence stated that India will export ammunition, weapons, subsystems, and components to nearly 80 countries in 2024-25, emphasising the importance of domestic capability for national security.
