PM Modi Lauds Amit Shah for Record Tenure as Home Minister at NDA Meeting
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has officially become India’s longest-serving Home Minister, with 2,258 days in office as of August 4, 2025. He surpassed the previous record held by senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, who served for 2,256 days from March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004.
Shah assumed office on May 30, 2019, during the second term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The announcement coincided with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Parliamentary meeting, which was held at the Parliament Library Building. During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi recognised Shah’s record-breaking tenure and praised his contributions to national security and internal affairs.
August 5 also has symbolic significance. On the same day in 2019, Amit Shah announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament, marking the end of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under the Indian Constitution.
The record for the longest-serving home minister had previously also been held by Congress leader Govind Ballabh Pant.
Amit Shah’s tenure is now remembered not only for its duration, but also for several key policy decisions that shaped India’s internal security landscape during a politically transformative time.
