Dr Mansukh Mandaviya Unveils Grand Plans for Indian Hockey’s 100-Year Celebration
Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, has announced that the great celebration of 100 years of Indian hockey (1925-2025) will take place on November 7 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi. The event, arranged in collaboration with Hockey India, will also include simultaneous celebrations in over 550 districts, demonstrating the sport’s national appeal.
The milestone commemorates a century of Indian hockey pride and heritage, recognising its legends and inspiring young talent. Dr Mandaviya stated that the event commemorates a sport that has long been a part of India’s identity, representing endurance and unity. A 30-minute exhibition match between the Union Minister’s XI and Hockey India’s Mixed XI, featuring elite men and women players, will promote inclusivity and teamwork.
The centenary will also include a ceremony honouring renowned players, the release of a commemorative book titled “100 Years of Indian Hockey,” and a photo exhibition documenting the sport’s golden era. Over 1,400 matches across districts will involve more than 36,000 players, supporting gender equality by allowing both men and women to participate.
Hockey India President Dr Dilip Tirkey described it as a proud moment, highlighting the goal of developing grassroots talent and strengthening the sport.
