Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared that India will assist Fiji with disaster response measures in the face of growing climate change threats, demonstrating that, despite their geographical distance, the two countries have the same vision. PM Modi made these statements while speaking with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, who is now on a three-day visit to India, his first official visit since taking office.

PM Modi highlighted that India and Fiji are still dedicated to creating a region that is free, inclusive, open, secure, and prosperous. The leaders committed to enhancing defence and security cooperation, which resulted in seven agreements covering a wide range of industries. As part of this increased relationship, India would give training and equipment to help Fiji improve its maritime security.

This project is consistent with India’s overall objective of assisting Global South countries in building their capacities and ensuring strategic autonomy.

The visit strengthens strong cultural and historical ties, including the presence of a substantial Indo-Fijian population dating back to the late nineteenth century.

The Indian government stated that Rabuka’s visit highlights the long-standing bilateral relationship and their mutual commitment to increase involvement in significant industries.
