Electric Vehicle Sales Surge in India Despite GST Cuts for Petrol Cars
According to Vahan data, India’s electric vehicle (EV) market continues to shatter records in October 2025, with total sales hitting 2,34,274 units, a 7% increase over the same month last year. This surpasses the previous peak of 2,19,722 units set in October 2024, indicating a new milestone in the country’s expanding EV sector.
Despite internal combustion vehicles becoming less expensive under GST 2.0, and EVs still incurring a 5% GST, the trend for electric mobility remained strong, with over 7,500 daily sales throughout the month.
All segments contributed to the surge, with two- and three-wheelers leading the way. Electric two-wheelers accounted for 61% of overall sales, reaching 1.43 lakh units – their highest monthly record ever. Between January and October 2025, the segment sold 1.06 million units, up 11% year-on-year. Tata Motors continued to dominate the market with a 40% share.
Commercial EVs also increased 121% year-on-year to 1,902 units, driven by light goods carriers. With 18.46 lakh EVs sold this year, India is on track to surpass 2 million annual sales by November, cementing its position as a leader in sustainable mobility.
