Terengganu is aiming to establish itself as Malaysia’s renewable energy powerhouse by launching a series of clean energy projects that would reshape the state’s industrial landscape. PETRONAS Senior Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management, Datuk Ir. Bacho Pilong emphasised this goal at the East Coast Energy 2025 Seminar in Kuala Terengganu. He stated that the state is transitioning away from its traditional oil and gas industry and towards sustainable energy leadership.

The Kenyir Hybrid Floating Solar Farm, which can produce up to 1,000 megawatts of solar power, is a key component in this shift. Half of this capacity will be used to support Terengganu’s first green hydrogen hub, which was created in collaboration with PETRONAS, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and Terengganu Inc. Ir. Bacho praised the project as an important step towards Malaysia’s sustainable energy transition.

PETRONAS is also investing in training and environmental initiatives in the state. The PETRONAS Energy Transition Academy at INSTEP intends to train people in low-carbon industries. Local business support continues through vendor schemes, with almost RM342 million distributed to Terengganu enterprises since 2018.

Marine conservation programmes, such as the artificial reef initiative on Pulau Kapas, have increased local biodiversity.
