South Korea Opens First Korean Cultural Centre in Malaysia
South Korea opened its first Korean Cultural Centre in Malaysia on 30 October, establishing a permanent venue in Kuala Lumpur for cultural programmes and exchanges between the two countries.
The centre is the 36th Korean Cultural Centre worldwide and the fifth in Southeast Asia. Located opposite the Petronas Twin Towers, the facility includes a 100-seat performance hall, an exhibition room, a cinema, a library and classrooms.
The performance hall is equipped with a large LED display for cultural presentations. It can also serve as a reading and social space when performances are not scheduled.
The centre will organise exhibitions, performances, workshops and cultural classes. It is also expected to develop joint programmes with Malaysian artists, educational institutions and local organisations.
The establishment builds on a memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation signed by the Malaysian and South Korean governments in 2020. The agreement provides a framework for expanding cultural exchanges and collaborative activities.
South Korea’s First Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kim Young-soo, attended the opening ceremony alongside representatives from Malaysia’s cultural sector. He said the centre would support cooperation with local organisations and create opportunities for the Korean cultural industry.
The public opening is scheduled for 2 November, allowing visitors to access the facility and its programmes.
The centre’s launch comes amid international interest in Korean music, television, film, food and other cultural exports. Its activities are intended to extend engagement beyond popular entertainment through educational initiatives and exchanges.
The new institution gives Malaysian audiences a dedicated space to explore Korean arts and traditions while providing a platform for collaboration between cultural communities in both countries.
