India Surpasses United States to Become World’s Second-Largest Solar Growth Market
India has overtaken the United States to become the world’s second-largest market for annual solar capacity additions in 2025, according to data cited by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The country added more than 37 gigawatts of solar capacity during the year, surpassing the United States’ 34 gigawatts, while China retained the top position with nearly 315 gigawatts added.
The achievement reflects the rapid pace of India’s clean-energy transition. Installed solar capacity rose from 98.5 GW in 2024 to 135.5 GW in 2025, driven by strong policy support, infrastructure development, and increasing investment in renewable energy. India also surpassed Japan to become the world’s third-largest solar power producer.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi described India as one of the fastest-growing major solar markets globally. The country recorded its highest-ever annual solar capacity addition during FY26, underscoring its commitment to energy security and sustainable development. The milestone strengthens India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy and supports its long-term goal of expanding non-fossil fuel power generation.
