DRDO and Safran to Jointly Develop 120-kN Engines for AMCA
India is all set to formally launch a landmark partnership with France’s Safran to co-develop and manufacture advanced fighter aircraft engines within the nation. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will soon submit the plan to the Cabinet Committee on Security for approval.
The project will involve complete technology transfer to produce powerful 120-kilonewton engines for Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and future fighter systems.
The initiative, worth $7 billion, will be carried out by DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment in collaboration with Safran. Officials revealed that the French aerospace company’s bid was determined to be the most realistic choice, citing its long-standing presence in India and ongoing development on helicopter engines.
Addressing a global forum, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that manufacturing indigenous fighter jet engines is a decisive step towards building fifth-generation aircraft domestically. India’s defence exports increased from ₹686 crore in 2013-14 to ₹23,600 crore in 2024-25, reaching almost 100 countries.
With increased orders for Tejas fighter jets and defence industrial corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu attracting investment, India is making steady progress towards its vision of Aatmanirbharta.
