Sustainable Tourism in UAE: Sharjah’s Nomad Retreat to Open in 2025
Sharjah continues to strengthen its reputation as a leader in sustainable tourism with the unveiling of its newest project, Nomad, which is set to open in late 2025. The retreat will feature 20 specially designed solar-powered trailers set in Kalba’s mountain valleys, providing tourists with an off-grid vacation that is deeply connected to nature. The project is part of the Sharjah Collection, which is a hospitality portfolio maintained by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority.
Unlike traditional resorts, Nomad has implemented a no-Wi-Fi, no-lights policy to reduce environmental impact while encouraging visitors to disconnect digitally and enjoy the natural surroundings. The trailers are locally constructed, totally powered by solar energy, and designed with protocols to safeguard Kalba’s terrain, wildlife, and rainfall.
Sharjah has previously set up six additional retreats in deserts, mangroves, archaeological locations, and heritage villages. Each development employs sustainable strategies such as water conservation, biodegradable materials, and eco-sensitive design. Together, these retreats make up Shurooq’s Dh850 million hospitality portfolio, which presently includes over 150 accommodation units.
The emirate’s effort coincides with the worldwide wellness and eco-tourism boom. Sharjah continues to follow international slow travel trends while prioritising natural landscapes and cultural heritage, with tourist visits rising 11% in 2024.
