India surpasses 150 GW solar milestone amid renewable surge

India has crossed a major milestone in its clean energy journey, with solar power capacity surpassing 150 gigawatts (GW).

India has crossed a major milestone in its clean energy journey, with solar power capacity surpassing 150 gigawatts (GW). The achievement comes amid a record expansion of renewable energy installations during the financial year ending March 2026.

The surge has been driven largely by solar energy, which accounted for the majority of new renewable capacity additions. India added over 44 GW of solar capacity in a single year, reflecting rapid growth in both large-scale and rooftop solar installations.

With this expansion, India’s total renewable energy capacity has reached over 220 GW, positioning the country among the global leaders in clean energy deployment. Solar power continues to play a central role in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.

The growth has been supported by government initiatives, policy incentives, and increasing investment in renewable infrastructure. Rooftop solar installations have also seen significant growth, contributing to decentralized energy generation.

Experts view this milestone as a critical step toward India’s long-term goal of achieving a substantial share of electricity from non-fossil fuel sources and strengthening energy security through sustainable means.
