Malaysia Ends 20-Year Wait with Bronze Medal in Asian Canoe Polo

Malaysia made history by winning their first men's bronze medal in the 19th Asian Canoe Polo Championships, breaking a 20-year drought since their debut in the competition.

Malaysia made history by winning their first men’s bronze medal in the 19th Asian Canoe Polo Championships, breaking a 20-year drought since their debut in the competition. The milestone victory occurred at the Putrajaya Water Sports Complex, as the Malaysian national team defeated Singapore 2-0 in the bronze medal playoff. Previously, they fought hard in the semi-finals but lost 2-4 to Japan, missing out on a place in the gold medal match.

This success marked a turning point for Malaysian canoe polo, as the country achieved its greatest overall performance at the event. Together with the Under-21 (U-21) squads’ contribution, Malaysia finished the tournament with one gold and two bronze medals. The women’s U-21 team won Malaysia’s first gold medal since their debut in 2005, while the men’s U-21 team added another bronze to their tally.

The Malaysian Canoe Association (MASCA) vice-president, Raja Shahrul Azremel, praised the victory, saying it showed Malaysia’s developing strength in the sport. He urged for canoe polo to be included in the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia, expressing confidence that talented U-21 players can deliver gold medals at the senior level in the future.
