Government Push and Consumer Demand Propel India Past 1 Million EV Sales

India has crossed a major milestone in its shift to clean mobility by selling more than one million electric cars (EVs) in the financial year 2024-25. H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, confirmed the achievement at the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations’ Auto Retail Conclave. He stated that this record sales figure underlines India’s status as one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets.

Electric two-wheelers registered by 21%, while electric three-wheelers expanded by an astonishing 57%, reflecting strong consumer demand in both urban and semi-urban areas. According to industry observers, India is moving beyond the early adoption phase and into a period of large-scale EV preparation. The mass mobility segment, particularly two- and three-wheelers, is still the key driver of this surge.

Government efforts like FAME, EMPS, and the PM E-DRIVE program have played critical roles in providing financial incentives, production-linked rewards, and charging infrastructure support. Several state-level subsidies have encouraged EV purchases while encouraging domestic manufacturing under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” mission.

Experts expect that as battery technology advances and infrastructure expands, EV adoption will rise even more in the coming years, lowering carbon emissions and enhancing India’s energy security.
