Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Maruti Suzuki’s first battery electric vehicle, the e-Vitara, at the company’s manufacturing site in Hansalpur, Ahmedabad. The car, designed as a global strategic model, is a significant step forward in India’s electric mobility ambitions.

The e-Vitara, which was designed and manufactured in India, will be exported to over 100 countries, including Europe and Japan, placing the nation at the centre of Suzuki’s global EV plan. The Prime Minister’s Office announced that India will now serve as Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles, strengthening the Make in India initiative.

PM Modi also inaugurated the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery facility at Hansalpur, which is a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki. The plant will manufacture hybrid battery electrodes, ensuring that more than 80% of the battery value is created domestically. Officials emphasised that this step will lessen reliance on imports while also developing a strong battery ecosystem.

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, unveiled the e-Vitara at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025. In FY25, the company produced 2.6 million units across four sites, sold 19.01 lakh automobiles in India, and exported 3.32 lakh units.
