PLI Schemes Drive India’s Electronics Boom; Mobile Imports Nearly Eliminated by FY25
According to Union Minister Piyush Goyal, India’s electronics industry increased its exports by 47% in the first quarter of 2025-26 compared to the same period last year. He credited the spike to the government’s policy drive through Make in India and production-linked incentives schemes, which have revolutionised the sector over the last decade.
From just two mobile manufacturing plants in 2014, India now boasts over 300, making it the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer. By FY25, electronics output increased sixfold to ₹11.3 lakh crore, while exports grew eightfold to ₹3.27 lakh crore in ten years. Mobile phone production grew from ₹18,000 crore in FY15 to ₹5.45 lakh crore by FY25, while exports increased from ₹1,500 crore to approximately ₹2 lakh crore. Mobile imports, which were at 75% in 2014, have dropped significantly to just 0.2%.
The electronics ecosystem today supports a considerable number of jobs in solar modules, networking devices, chargers, and components. The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme, which will begin in April 2025, is designed to strengthen the local supply chain and attract new investment.
