India to Add 10,023 Medical Seats by FY29 Under Centrally Sponsored Schemes
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a major expansion of India’s medical education capacity, adding 10,023 new undergraduate and postgraduate seats to government medical institutes. This decision is part of Phase III of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), which aims to develop and improve state and central government medical colleges, standalone postgraduate institutes, and government hospitals.
A total of 5,000 postgraduate seats will be created in various medical specialities, while 5,023 new MBBS seats will be added through the upgrade of existing government colleges. The government has changed the cost ceiling for each MBBS seat to ₹1.5 crore to facilitate the expansion and improve infrastructure and training.
The projects cost ₹15,034.5 crore from FY26 to FY29, with the central government giving ₹10,303.2 crore and the states providing ₹4,731.3 crore. This program is expected to expand the availability of specialist doctors, create jobs in the healthcare sector, and improve prospects for students seeking to practise medicine.
By FY29, India plans to strengthen its network of 808 medical institutions and expand beyond the current 1,23,700 MBBS seats.
